About gwynna

gwynna is the author of The Last Captain series. Ever since she was little, she has enjoyed telling stories, and she is intrigued and inspired by almost everything to continue writing and sharing the truth.

When she is not writing, she enjoys playing music, especially the harp, and helping around the home with anything she can, from cooking to laundry to helping with the garden.

How it started

The very first draft, a story I wrote when I was eleven, was the inspiration for The Last Captain, though it had very few similarities. It began one night as a short image in my head, like a picture come alive, of a black squirrel leaping from a cave, sword drawn and shining, a red patch covering his left eye. And that was how it all began. I wrote the first book, then the second, then the third, then the fourth. And when that was over, I realized I wanted something more. So I completely scrapped the whole idea, though I kept parts that I liked best, and with much thinking and writing and rewriting and tweaking, I came out with Aylmer MacKennan, and all the characters and places and ideas that are now held in the first book of the series, Sails Again.

Thanks To My Family

Though the journey is not over, either with this trilogy or with any of the rest of my writings, I have learned a great deal, and I have been encouraged and comforted and educated by many great people, mostly my family. Their support has meant a great deal to me, and I could not have gotten this far without them.

What A Newspaper Said

A quirky quote about the book from one of my beloved brothers

“An invigorating blend of fantasy and political drama, with base notes of historical fiction and mystery. Reminiscent of Tolkien, Jane Austen, Redwall, and Horatio Hornblower. A complex brew, a delicate and delightful balance of dark and brooding, light and airy, grounded and introspective. Pairs well with baked Brie, unsweet hot chocolate, and long nights binge reading.”
