Writing prompts are short paragraphs, only a few sentences, describing something for you to write. These prompts are for several different genres, and can add some challenges, such as a time limit, or a number of words, or a certain style. The prompts are for writers of all ages. And they are not limited to writers only. Anyone interested can enjoy thinking and talking about these things. Enjoy!
- A boy is lost in the woods, with nothing to help him get back except one item.
- The police have called it a seemingly natural death, but a former detective is not so certain. Write a scene about this in 10 minutes.
- What is your favorite season? Why?
- Describe a world where certain animals can talk, but some cannot. Write it in 1000 words.
- You have just received the news that a close family member has passed away. What is your initial response? What are your best memories about this person?
- Write an in-depth description of a character you have not filled out, describing his/her looks, personality, strengths and weaknesses, and how where they come from, location and background, has affected them.
- Take a character of yours, developed or not, and put them in this situation; They come to a favored place of theirs, wherever that is, and they find that someone they do not like is there. What is their reaction? How do they feel? What do they say?
- What if one of your characters was in Aylmer’s position?
- What would you do if you were in Aylmer’s position?
- Write a Shakespearean Sonnet about the changing of seasons.
- Pick three of your favorite stories, and make a list of how they are similar, and what makes them different from each other.
- Write a short story about a baby polar bear going fishing by himself/herself for the first time.
