Ebenezer Day

May the second is an important day for myself and my family. It is the day we at last, after twenty years, moved from a small house in the city to the homestead we have now. The circumstances were strange, everything went perfectly and happened so quickly, even the realtors were surprised. Every day in the two years we have been here, it has become more and more obvious that God has been with us, every step of the way. Our homestead is called Ebenezer, meaning ‘Stone of Help’, and May the second has become a family holiday, not only for our moving to a better place, but for God’s blessings.

The Poem

This poem is titled Ebenezer. It is following the strange style of pantoum, a style unfamiliar to me at the time, but fascinating and surprisingly complicated. I chose this style because it was new to me, and I wanted something different, something I had never done or heard of before.

Ebenezer

O God of all things, you have brought us home

To a land outside the city smoke.

A bright green land of hills and vales,

A hint, a glimpse of your great works.

We come to work and rejoice

Under the shining sun of all your might.

It is all we need to praise you,

To lift your name above all else.

Under the shining sun of all your might

You have put us in our place,

To lift your name above all else,

With all life’s joys and sufferings.

You have put us in our place,

By your own will you have established us.

With all life’s joys and sufferings,

We strive to bring glory to your name.

By your own will you have established us,

By your love and grace you have set us free.

We strive to bring glory to your name

For all the blessings poured out on us.

By your love and grace you have set us free,

O God of all things, you have brought us here.

For all the blessings poured out on us

You paid the greatest, fullest price.

O God of all things, you have brought us here,

But this place is not for eternity.

You paid the greatest, fullest price,

To one day bring us to your heavenly home.
